Defections: Atiku Slams Selective Outrage Says , Moment I Greet Obi, El-Rufai, Or Visit Buhari, It Becomes  National Emergency But PDP/Tinubu Deals Are Strategic Alliances

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to the recent defection of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the current Governor of the state, Sheriff Oborevwori, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration has no achievements to stand on, urging Nigerians to move beyond party politics and address the country’s deteriorating economic conditions.

In a statement released Friday evening, Atiku acknowledged receiving several inquiries regarding his stance on the defections, emphasizing that in a democracy, everyone is entitled to join any political party of their choice.

“At a time when party politics seem to dominate the headlines, let’s not forget that the true concern is the worsening state of our economy. Freedom of association and expression are not optional in a democracy; they are basic rights,” Atiku stated.

He lamented the hypocrisy in Nigerian politics, noting how his engagements with political figures like Peter Obi, Nasir el-Rufai, or visits to former President Muhammadu Buhari have sparked national outrage, while similar interactions from PDP leaders with President Tinubu are overlooked or celebrated as “strategic alliances.”

“Whenever I meet with figures like Peter Obi, el-Rufai, or visit Buhari, it’s considered a national emergency. But when PDP leaders broker deals with President Tinubu, it’s simply seen as a strategic alliance. Hypocrisy and selective outrage have never been so rampant in our politics,” Atiku said.

Atiku stressed that the real battle facing the country is not a political contest between parties, but the dire situation Nigerians are facing under the current administration. He criticized the Tinubu administration for its failure to address the country’s growing economic problems, citing rising inflation, job losses, and youth restiveness.

“The real fight is not APC versus PDP, or LP versus APC; it is Nigerians versus an administration that has failed us. Inflation is spiraling, jobs are disappearing, and the youth are increasingly frustrated. Nigerians are not just tired—they are angry, and rightfully so,” he added.

He also criticized the administration’s lack of a tangible record of accomplishments, claiming that the Tinubu government has resorted to divisive tactics as a last-ditch effort to distract from its incompetence. “An incompetent leader does not just fail—they endanger everyone under their command. The Tinubu administration has no achievements to stand on; its only strategy is chaos and division,” Atiku concluded.
